Unique Updo Ideas

There is nothing more exciting than finding a new hairstyle that you absolutely love.  Some people are resistant to change and get a little bit scared when they think about mixing things up. When it comes to your hairstyle, this can be especially true.  Spicing things up in the hair department can sometimes help with overall confidence and getting a fresh perspective on things.  We understand that the decision to change up your look, even if it is for a one-time event, may not be an easy decision.  If you have decided to mix it up, here are a couple of ideas for some funky, unique, updo hairstyles that are sure to turn some heads.

High Bun Twisted Updo – This can be an awesome simple updo hairdo if done right.  To get this look, start by getting a ponytail going directly on top of your head.  I recommend using some trusted product in the ponytail to maintain shape.  Twist the ponytail all the way up starting on the bottom until you have secured it into a high bun or knot.  Once you get a solid top, you can transform the rest of your hair any way you like.  You may choose to go with messy strands that slide off around your whole head.  This is good way to get a sexy, flirty look.  You may choose to make it a little more elegant by parting the sides and getting a side swept creation on either side.  Using some product should give you plenty of options to get a unique look.  This look can be great style choice for prom updos and wedding updos.

Half Down High Ponytail Updo – This is another easy one to create.  Create a ponytail high up on the back of the head.  Puff out the middle of the head under the ponytail to give a fuller look.  Once you have the back and the middle done you can style your bangs to your desire.  This is a fun style and a great updo for long hair choice.

Finding The Right Hairstylist

Hello updo lovers!  Many women would love to be able to create and do their own hairstyles.  Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with the talent and artistic ability to craft beautiful updos at a moment’s notice.

From our experience, one of the hardest things to do is find a hairstylist that you love and trust.  Looking great can sometimes come at a price.  We recommend that you don’t try to cut corners when finding that certain salon or stylist to do your “do”.  In reality, the truth is that sometimes you actually will get what you pay for.  We understand that you may be able to achieve simple updos by yourself.  However, if you need to get prom updos, wedding updos, or formal updos, you may need to visit a professional stylist.

In our opinion, the best way to find a great hairstylist is to ask around.  If you see a great updo on somebody, don’t be afraid to ask them where they got it done.  Word of mouth is usually the best way to find a stylist that you can rely on.

It also helps to remember that you don’t have to lock yourself in to a certain salon if you have not been happy with past results.  Don’t be afraid to switch it up every now and then to see if there is somebody out there who might be able to give you a fresh new look.  Like I mentioned before, you may have to pay a little more if you desire top quality hair attention.

When you do find that stylist that is a perfect match for you and your hair, make sure that you take care of her/him!  Make sure that you let them know how good of a job they did, and show them by being extra generous with your tip!

Holiday Hairstyle Ideas

It’s that time of year again.  It’s time to check the shopping lists, make plans with friends and family, and get ready for all of those Holiday parties!  Sometimes we can get overwhelmed with all the little things that come along with the Holidays.  One thing that you shouldn’t overlook is that perfect Holiday hairstyle.  If you are like most people, you will probably be invited to at least one party this season.  Whether it is a company party, family party, or just a small get together, finding the perfect hairstyle shouldn’t cause any worry this year.

Here are a few suggestions from your friends at UpdoGuru.

Curly Updo – Curls are always a good way to transform an ordinary hairstyle into a fantastic one.  Of course we recommend a curly updo but you can also wear the curls down if you prefer.

Side Ponytail Updo – We love the side ponytail.  When done right you can get a super-flirty look if you single ladies are trying to impress that special someone.

Messy Updo – You can never go wrong with a messy updo.  With just the right amount of your favorite product, you can create a masterpiece that is sure to turn heads at any Holiday party.

Holiday Accessory Updo – Getting in to the Holiday spirit should be fun.  We always love when we see updos accessorized with Holiday themes.  You might be surprised what a bow, pine branch, or even a Christmas tree ornament (don’t steal from the tree!) will do to accentuate your hairstyle.  If you are feeling a little bit wild, incorporate some fresh mistletoe into your updo and just see how many people notice your Holiday accessory.

Remember to have fun and don’t stress out.  The Holidays are supposed to be a time of joy.  Let your imagination run as you try to pick a cool hairstyle for the upcoming season.

Hair Tie-Dying

Just when you thought that celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Nicki Minaj have pushed the hair color envelope as far as it could go, reality television star, Lauren Conrad shows us that there are no limitations when it comes to hair color. Another the trend of hair tip-dyeing has been rocked by Nicki Minaj and Drew Barrymore, Conrad is one of the first celebs to try out what is being called “hair tie-dyeing” on her own hair. Reportedly, Conrad decided to have her stylist color her hair this way after polling fans on her blog. Pictures the star posted after the procedure revealed incredible results and have started a new hair-coloring trend all over the world.

The guru predicts that this fad will continue to grow and evolve and be the next must have hairstyle along with hair tinsel, feathers, and glitter. The unique thing about the hair tie-dyeing is the way the colors are layered and textured to create the neat visual effect of classic tie-dye. People have been tye-dyeing their clothes and accessories for generations, yet creating the look with their hair is definitely something new.

The bright array of colors in Conrad’s hair included mostly purples, pinks, and blues. Other colors that would help achieve that tye-dye look are hues such as yellow, red, green, and orange. Although it may be tempting to try out this look yourself, remember that Conrad most likely had the assistance of a trained professional before the dye-job.  LC is no stranger to updo hairstyles and adding a bit of color to one is a great idea for spicing things up a bit. It is important to use the right kind of coloring tools and products to achieve this style and that is why having an stylist color your hair is probably the best bet.

Taylor Swift Retro Updo

In  recent appearance promoting her new Wonderstruck fragrance, Taylor Swift sported a fabulous retro updo.  Taylor, who often channels her beauty through her hairstyles showed once again that her versatility can span decades.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Updo Hairstyle

As we had hoped, the newly crowned Duchess of Cambridge wore a fabulous half up half down updo hairstyle on her wedding day that was fit for a queen.  The gorgeous loose waves coupled with the side part, was signature Kate.

The best part about this wedding updo is that it is relatively easy to re-create.  Here is how we would go about styling your hair to achieve a similar look:

1.       Create a deep side part in your hair in a location that suits your hair type and face shape.  Kate of course is blessed with the perfect oval shape but any shape can do as well.

2.       I would use a 1.5-2.5 inch barrel curling iron and separate your hair into two sections.

3.       Pull the 3” sections back over each ear towards the back of your head.  Make sure to leave the curls loose and do not flatten them.

4.       Pin the sections to the back with bobby pins.  These shouldn’t be visible and should also correlate to the type of hair you have.

5.       I would then use the curling iron to add some additional curl and then spray to keep in place.

6.       If you have a tiara or hair piece to hold it in place on the top, go ahead and put that on now.

If you’re not able to successfully re-create the look at home, your stylist is sure to be able to do so as the requests will come pouring in this prom and wedding season.  This will be one of the most popular wedding updos this season but will also be popular for any formal event this spring and summer.

We will keep an eye on Kate’s post-marriage appearances to see if she will try out any new updos.  She wears just about every hairstyle with perfection but nothing can compare to her perfect wedding up style.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Hair – will it be an updo?

The royal wedding is one of the most anticipated events of this decade if not the most anticipated.  Of course the pressing question that we are asking is will her hair be in an updo or not?  Royal weddings have traditionally seen pulled back conservative looks.   Could Kate be the first to break the mold or sport a messy or classic wedding updo hairstyle?  While the odds are against her, we are holding out hope for a fabulous updo.

We know that Kate is capable of wearing updos as she’s been spotted wearing elegant buns, half up half down styles as well as classic high chignons.  Her long locks were made for updos and we’ll be on the edge of our seat watching to see what her hairstylist sends her down the aisle in.

There’s no doubt it will be utterly fabulous and that it will be absolute perfection.  Let’s just hope it’s an updo!

Updos with Feathers for Prom 2011

A major trend sweeping Hollywood over the past few months has been adding a feather as an accessory to a hairstyle.  While they have been mostly used as extensions, there is also the possibility to add them to updo hairstyles.

There are different types of feathers that can be added depending on your personality and how elaborate and attention grabbing you want the hairstyle to be.  They have ranged from massive 10-inch winged accessories to subtle pieces that are hardly noticeable.

A number of celebrities have been spotted with feathers casually out on the town as well as on the red carpet.  Kesha, Paula Abdul and Nicole Ritchie have sported the new trending look during recent outings. Below I’ve included some of our favorite feathered looks that will hopefully inspire a feather updo hairstyle for prom in 2011.

Prom updo with feathersThe feathers in the image above are used to accentuate the high messy bun.  They add a unique flair that can be styled easily for prom.

The idea behind the use of feathers is to make your hairstyle unique.  If you are wearing an updo for prom or are looking for unique prom ideas for 2011, then adding feathers either in an updo or in a down style can differentiate you from the crowd.

Updos are in for prom 2011 as are feathers in the hair.  We suggest combining them to make your look memorable.  Consult with your hairstylist to see if you hair length and texture is right for the updo you desire.  There are hundreds of options so it’s just a matter of picking out with one works for you.

Updo Hair Accessories for Prom

With your big day approaching in just a few months, you have likely started the process of deciding on one of many updo hairstyles for prom.  There are hundreds of fabulous styles to choose form this year but in this post we will focus on choosing an accessory.

Since updos are our focus, we will assume you’ve arrived on this site because you will be wearing one for prom.  While messy updos can be gorgeous a-la-carte, going an extra mile with an accessory will provide an added touch that can truly make your style unique.

Consider the following scenario: you are neck and neck with the most popular girl in school for the prom queen title.  You are both wearing fabulous updos and look stunning from head to toe.  What will push the judges over the edge? Chances are, a strategically chosen hair piece will be enough to decide a tiebreaker.

Here are some of our favorite pieces that will surely be in style for this year’s prom.

1. Tiara – a classic choice for prom that is also a useful tool for keeping hair out of your face while dancing the night away.

2. Hair barrette – find an object or style that suits your personality.  My personal favorite is a pink butterfly.

3. Hair bun holders – if you are wearing your hair up in a bun, this could perfectly compliment a high or low bun updo style.

4. Hair headband – a headband while seemingly simple, can offer a gorgeous touch to any updo.

5. Live Flower – our personal favorite is the addition of a live flower to your hairstyle.  Pick a flower that suits your personal and a color to match.  Prom is a spring event and nothing says spring better than a freshly picked ornament for your updo.

We don’t suggest spending big bucks on an accessory unless it will be the centerpiece of your hairstyle or outfit.  There are plenty of budget options available that will enhance your look ten fold.  Don’t be afraid to ask family members or friends if they would be willing to lend one to you for the night.  Just be sure to keep track of it and leave it in a safe place before the post-prom activities get started.
