Hair Tinsel for Prom

The 2011 prom season will be upon us before we know it and it's never to soon to start thinking about the perfect prom updo and accessories to go along with it.  A recent trend that will likely hit its peak during prom season will be adding tinsel to an updo hairstyle

Tinsel, which is known primarily as a Christmas decoration, has recently emerged as a resourceful and fun accessory for updos and other hairstyles.  The metallic colored strands are the most popular but any color can be used to add that extra flair of elegance you're looking for.  The tinsel acts as a form of highlights and can help draw attention to your fabulous look.

Prom updos and tinsel

While tinsel can be added to any prom hairstyle, here are a few suggestions we've come up with that will be sure to make heads turn.

1. Messy updo with tinsel strands casually glistening from the loose tendrils

2. Braided updo with intertwined pieces of tinsel.  Consider using contrasting colors if you are using more than one braid.

3. Medium hair updo pulled up to either side. Place some tinsel in the pulled back side of the hair.

Benefits of using tinsel in hair

tinsel is a fantastic alternative to dyed highlights or other more complicated accessories.  Tinsel can be added and removed at will and provides flexibility and cutting edge style to your look.

Celebrities have also jumped on the tinsel bandwagon and the trend will continue in 2011.  Beyonce wore some gorgeous strands at the 2010 Grammy Awards and reality TV star Adrienne Maloof sported some in a recent episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Snookie, of Jersey Shore fame, has also displayed tinsel in her hair on numerous occasions.

The amount of sparkle can be varied depending on the look you are going for.  Subtle strands may be the perfect added accessory to complete your prom updo.  If you are going for a fabulous updo with glitter and sparkle, then thick, longer pieces can attract the much deserved attention.

Updo Guru Bold 2011 Prediction

Watch for Lauren Conrad to embrace tinsel as her new signature look.  With her cute braids on the way out, she'll be headed to tinsel town often this year.  Taylor Swift will also have a go at tinsel in the hair and the trend will spread like wildfire leading up to this year's prom season.

*Update - While our prediction may not have come entirely true, we have some new suggestions for prom updos in 2012!
