| For a guys perspective on updo hairstyles, we’ve asked a guest writer to offer his thoughts and
opinions on updos and women’s style in general. Every month we will feature an article on a specific
topic written by Doug Mathews. Doug, a self-proclaimed expert on women and humorist, is thrilled to be
able to offer his two cents. You can contact Doug with any questions or comments via email at

Topic of the month:
Hair up or hair down?First off, I have to be honest and say that I had never
heard of the term ‘updo’ prior being approached by Updo Guru. I was familiar with hair up styles but
was unfamiliar with this term. Reading through the site however has been quite enlightening. The
main idea of this website is that an updo is the perfect hairstyle for any occasion. I could not agree more
and I will elaborate as to why.
Reason #1: Any girl can turn a drab or average hair day into something sexy by simply
doing anything with their hair. If a girl has her hair up, it conveys the message of “I am making an
effort!”. Most guys cannot tell whether a hairdo took 3 hours or 3 minutes to create. It’s simply not
something we notice unless we were given advance notice that we should notice. Putting your hair up
sends the message that time and effort was put into the hairstyle.
Reason #2: A girl with her hair up is more fun than a girl with her hair down. Now
you might be thinking that this contradicts the old saying of “let your hair down”. That saying however was
introduced in the 17th century and really could not be more irrelevant today. The 21st century version of
this saying should in fact be “throw your hair up”. A girl with her hair up radiates a flirty fun appeal that
exudes a certain confidence. It simply comes down to the fact that if a guy has to choose between a girl with
her hair up or her hair down, 90% of the time he’ll prefer the girl with the hair up. While scientific
studies have yet to prove this theory, I’m standing by it.
Reason #3: The third and most important reason to wear your hair up is that guys will
notice. I’m not insinuating that guys will come up to you and say “wow I love your updo!”, and if they
do there actually might be a slight cause of concern, but it’s more of a subconscious thing. We want to see
your neckline and I can promise that you’ll never find a guy who prefers a girl’s hair down.
So girls, the next time you’re trying to decide between throwing your hair up or letting it down, just remember
that a guy will always prefer it up. In 1655 John Cotgrave wrote “Descheveler, to discheuell; to pull the
hair about the ears” when referring to a women letting her hair down. In 2010 that quote would be better
suited to read “Descheveler, to discheuell; to pull the hair above the ears” .
