Funky Updos

If you’re looking for something a bit different this prom and wedding season then perhaps a funky updo (close relative of the messy updo) is what you have been looking for! The sky is the limit when it comes to unique updo styles and if you tend to go to the beat of your own drum, then perhaps some of the hairstyles below are for you!

When it comes to funky updos, Gwen Stefani is the first person that comes to mind. She is ahead of the game in all aspects of fashion and her fearless approach to hairstyles is enviable. How about this double bun messy updo? This perfectly suits her personality not to mention very practical for performing!

A funky updo can be achieved by anyone and can be used for just about any occasion. Pin up your hair in a slightly different manner than usual or add a strategically placed accessory. No matter your hair length or texture, a little spice can be added to all hair types.

Ashlee Simpson Funky Updo

New nose or old nose, we love Ashlee’s style and continually changing updos.  Here is an interwoven short hairstyle pulled up in back.  A couple loose strands of the fringe makes this style unique.  This is a great prom hairstyle for those with shorter hair.

Ashlee wows us again with this funky style updo.  This is a very simple to recreate and is easily customizable to add a distinctive touch.  Hair bands are being seen with more frequency in 2010 and this displays an excellent use of one.   This style is also highly recommended for prom!

We define funky as something that is just a bit out of the ordinary:  a double bun, swirls, an abnormal quiff, runaway curls, an odd color.  In short, anything that makes your hair distinct!  In some cases this could just mean adding a special accessory.  Retro could also be described as funky.  Here are a couple retro looks that with a modern touch could be considered funky, yet elegant at the same time.

While we love Helena Bonham Carter and her inimitable personality , here is one hairstyle that garners more appeal as a nesting ground than an inspired updo.

Denise Richards did little better in her effort to bring ‘bed head’ back in style.  While we never rule out any kind of celebrity trend, I’m not sure the public is ready for this one.
